„We used Steiner Binoculars on for every leg of the Volvo Ocean Race, they certainly didn’t get an easy life, with water over the deck most of the time and the plenty of abuse from on a race boat, however they stood up to everything that was thrown at them and always worked well allowing us to keep a close eye on our competitors and the wind“
Simon Fisher, team Telefonica blue, 3rd place Volvo Ocean Race 2008/2009
„The Steiner Commander XP marine binoculars we used on Ericsson 4 proved to be a reliable and trusted tool for the Ericsson 4 crew in a range of conditions around the world. From the heat and humidity of the Tropics to the cold winds of the Yellow Sea and the wilderness of the Southern Ocean the precision optics performed perfectly.
We used the Steiner binoculars day after day during our intensive testing prior to the race and then for the whole nine month, 10 leg Volvo Ocean Race. The binoculars stood up well to the rough treatment dealt out on deck by the Volvo 70. With the racing so close in this edition of the race monitoring the opposition with binoculars, who were often in sight, was a regular and necessary job to get valuable information on relative performance. The compass and scale enabled accurate tracking of other boats.
The clarity of view and brightness helped us to wind spot and observe the many clouds and weather features we had to traverse during the four doldrums crossings in all conditions. During the shorter final legs as we sealed our victory the binoculars were invaluable to observe the buoys, marks, shipping, wind farms and other hazards we sailed through. They also enabled us to check out wind conditions near headlands, islands and coastlines.
Steiner Commander XP binoculars are one of the basic essentials for ocean and coastal racing navigation.“
