The binoculars of the Commander series are built according to military requirements. The Commander is built to withstand the toughest demands. In addition, the Commander has an improved anti-reflective coating on the lenses for high light transmission and has an additional Steiner Nano-Protection coating on the outer surfaces to allow water, dirt and oil to roll off the lenses.
While the Safari and the Safari Pro are similar in appearance and performance, the Safari UltraSharp represents a new generation with enhanced features and improved lens anti-reflection.
Porro prism and roof prism systems are two different optical systems and each has its advantages. Porro prism binoculars have an offset between objective and eyepiece optics. This results in the typical Z-construction, which the light has to follow on its way to the eye. Porro binoculars seem to be somewhat larger than roof binoculars, but they are extremely robust. Due to the distance between the lenses, porro prism binoculars create a 3D effect that helps to distinguish objects at different distances. With the STEINER Sports-Auto-Focus you only have to adjust the binoculars once to your personal visual error and then have a sharp image from 20m up to infinity. This makes it a binocular that can be used with one hand. The design of roof edge binoculars allows a straight light path to the eye. Therefore, these binoculars can be designed and built much more compactly. A feature of these binoculars is the adjustment of the focus (different distance to the object) with the help of a center wheel. These products are still quite robust, but it is far more difficult to make them pressure waterproof to a certain depth.
In order to be able to read off as accurate a direction measurement as possible on the compass scale, it is essential that the compass needle can rotate freely and undisturbed within the compass. The scale must be balanced in such a way that any contact between the compass needle and the compass housing is avoided; at any time and at any place during a measurement.
o Therefore, the world has been divided into at least 5 different magnetic field zones. Your compass is currently optimized for the magnetic field of the northern hemisphere (zone 2), of course only if you purchased binoculars in this region. If you sail too far outside this zone with this product, the compass rose may become unreadable or obstructed. Many circumnavigators therefore use 2 - 3 binoculars with different compass zones.
o Changing the compass module to another zone cannot be done independently.
If you are a circumnavigator, we recommend the Commander Global: No calibration or adjustment; the Commander Global is the spearhead and once again demonstrates the innovative capabilities of STEINER. The integrated electronic magnetic field measurement guarantees absolutely precise measurements anywhere in the world, whether in the Arctic Circle or the South Seas. Thanks to the digital technologies used, the measurements are extremely accurate. The display, similar to the analog compass, is integrated in the lower part of the field of view in such a way that it does not distract the eye. The simple and intuitive use, as well as an inclination compensation make the product a reliable partner at sea. You will be thrilled by the advantages of the Commander Global.
Your binoculars are outside the allowable adjustment or collimation values. Once the two sides are no longer aligned, your eyes will receive two different images, causing the blur or squint effect. However, this can be easily corrected if you return the binoculars for service.
On our homepage you will find the Steiner partner responsible for your country under "Dealer Locator". Please contact him. He will then take care of the transaction.
Open the binocular battery cover. Normally, no tools are required. Simply turn it counterclockwise. Note that the negative pole must be visible when you replace the cover and close the battery compartment watertight by turning it clockwise.
It depends on the model. Normally you inform the Customer Service about the model and serial number and for a flat rate of € 15,- you will receive the matching eyecups, which you can assemble yourself easily and quickly.
Unfortunately, with some models it is not possible to change the eyecups yourself, as a special tool is required for assembly. The binoculars would then have to be sent in. Of course, the replacement will be done on a goodwill basis. If you need new eyecups, please contact our customer service at customer-service-international@steiner.de There you will find out whether your glass has to be sent in or not.
There are two different focusing systems. The design alone reveals which system the binoculars are equipped with.
Sports-Auto-Focus
to be recognized by the missing focusing wheel
+ always sharp from approx. 20m to infinity
+ no refocusing
+ also works excellently at night
+ ideal for fast changing distances
- very close range not adjustable
Fast-Close-Focus
to be recognized by the focusing wheel
+ fast adjustment at short distance
+ Close-up focus range up to 2 m
- constantly readjust changing areas
- no longer focusable at night
We are looking for an object about 100 meters away, as detailed as possible.
We focus each eye one after the other by turning the diopter adjustment on the eyepiece. It is helpful to cover the other lens while focusing, preferably with the lens protection cap. This makes it possible to keep both eyes open, which makes it easier to see sharply. With this basic setting, a possibly necessary diopter compensation is done automatically. Now you can always see sharply from 20 m.
The basic setting of the Fast-Close-Focus (center drive):
We look for an object that is as far away and rich in detail as possible.
Cover the left lens with your hand (or better: with the lens cap) and turn the focusing wheel until the right eye can see clearly and sharply.
Then cover the left eyepiece and rotate the diopter compensation on the left eyepiece until you see the same object sharply. Covering enables you to keep both eyes open, which facilitates sharp vision.
Once the basic adjustment has been completed, the center wheel must be used to focus at different distances.
The basic setting of the Sports-Auto-Focus (missing focussing wheel):
We look for an object about 100 m away, as detailed as possible.
You can now see sharply from 20 m upwards.
We have abolished this function. However, it is the case that you do not receive any advantages through the registration. For example, it has no effect on the warranty period. In the event of a warranty claim, only the proof of purchase is valid. Should this have been lost, the guarantee would be calculated from the date of construction, which we can trace on the basis of the serial number.
Storage: If possible, the glass should be stored at room temperature and not in direct sunlight. Of course, it can also withstand heat or cold, but this could have a negative effect on the life expectancy of the rubber armouring, for example, in the long term.
For the care of the lenses: Here you should make sure that all coarser dirt is already removed from the lens before you wipe it with a cleaning cloth or something similar. Possibilities here would be for example compressed air or also the glass completely simply under flowing water to hold. (You can do this with all our lenses, but not with Safari UltraSharp).
For the maintenance of the rubber armoring: You can generally maintain the rubber armoring including the eyecups of binoculars with cockpit spray.
Simply spray on a soft sponge and rub it into the rubber parts. This prevents the rubber coating from becoming porous and cracked.
The Ranger Pro series is the predecessor of the current Ranger Xtreme series.
Since Steiner is constantly working on the optimization of the high-quality products, the main differences of the current Ranger Xtreme series lie in the more powerful high-contrast-optics.
The Ranger Xtreme series stands out due to its powerful high-contrast optics and is now equipped with even higher light transmission and an enlarged field of view as well as improved handling thanks to the handy NBR reinforcement and lower weight.
The main difference between the Commander and the Navigator Pro is the optical performance. This is much better with the Commander. The Commander's images are razor sharp and of the highest contrast - right to the edge.
The Commander also has extras, such as ergonomic eyecups that protect against incident light and wind, a reticle that can be used to calculate sizes and distances, and a much larger field of view. In contrast to the Navigator Pro, the Commander is equipped with the Nano-Protection coating, which makes water simply roll off.
You can use both versions into the night, as the 7x50 version is a night glass. However, the Commander has a higher quality coating and is brighter.
The Steiner Commander is waterproof up to 10 meters and the Navigator Pro up to 5 meters.
Finally, the Steiner Commander comes with a 30-year warranty and the Navigator Pro comes with a 10-year warranty.
If you look at the optical performance of both models, the Commander stands out clearly. The Commander also has a larger field of view than the Commander Global. All other extras are identical, such as the additional reticle, water resistance up to 10 metres, ergonomic eyecups, nano-protection and high-quality accessories. The Commander Global is equipped with a digital worldwide compass, which provides precise bearings all over the world through magnetic field measurement and declination adjustment. In addition, it has automatic brightness adjustment as well as tilt adjustment. The Commander with compass, on the other hand, has an analog, liquid-damped compass.
You can only attach eyecups that are standard on your binoculars. The ergonomic eyecups are only available for special models and, if available, are already included in the scope of delivery.
The nitrogen filling of Steiner binoculars is designed for about 30-40 years and does not have to be checked routinely. If you still wish to have your binoculars checked, you are of course welcome to send them in.
Some models do:
-all SkyHawk 4.0
-all Rangers Xtreme
-all Observers
-Wildlife 8x42, Wildlife 10x42
-Safari UltraSharp 10x42
You can use a coin to open the cover screw between the two lenses.
Here you will find a ¼ inch internal thread in which you can attach a corresponding adapter.
